Suzhou Key Laboratory for Urban Public Safety is geared to the needs of Suzhou’s social development and public safety, especially the needs to solve problems induced by conflagration, hazardous chemical leakage, and multi-hazard events. The Lab researches and develops advanced technologies for enhancing urban public safety, and builds platforms for technological innovation and domestic and international scientific cooperation, so as to promote the transformation and industrialization of scientific and technological achievements, and make innovative contributions to the sustainable development of Suzhou’s society and economy.
The Laboratory was planned in 2007 to serve scientific research, talent training, and achievement incubation on the basis of quality resources provided by the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science of the University of Science and Technology of China. The Lab covers an area of more than 1000 square meters, with an underground space thermal disaster experimental platform, an ultrafine water mist fire suppression experimental platform, a nanocomposite flame-retardant and functional material processing and testing platform, and a large fire safety simulation and analysis platform, etc.
Research Fields
The Lab focuses on the science and key technologies of urban public safety in the following four directions that have medium-and-long-term research value and development potential.
I. Digital city and disaster simulation technology
The Lab researches the digital city and key digital technologies, based on which it develops simulation reconstruction and digital simulation technologies for rapid prediction of sudden thermal disasters such as fires and hazardous chemical leaks, so as to achieve dynamic prediction of the developing process of disasters and accidents.
II. Urban public safety evaluation technology
The Lab develops the information acquisition, identification, risk assessment, and risk analysis techniques for urban major hazard sources and high-risk institutions, and studies the diagnosis, identification, grading, and classification methods for accident hazards, so as to develop key technologies of urban public safety evaluation for engineering applications.
III. Safety engineering materials
The Lab aims to research disaster formation and development principles, investigate engineering materials in the pre-disaster, disaster control, and post-disaster repair processes, create new methods and processes to design safety materials, and develop technologies and materials for disaster prevention and safety protection. The major work includes: development and engineering application of new safety materials (green flame retardants and flame retardant materials, as well as materials for fire prevention, thermal protection, safety energy storage, nuclear safety, anti-corrosion and anti-toxicity, etc.); material safety assessment methods and technologies; fire material evidence identification methods and technologies; and key technologies and materials for emergency disposal and environmental remediation of hazardous chemical accidents.
