From August 21 to 28, Bao Xinhe, the Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of USTC, led a delegation to Monash University, RMIT University, University of Wollongong, University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney and University of Queensland. It aims to seek closer cooperation with Australian universities on education and scientific research, and perfect USTC's contingent of personnel with expertise. During the visit, the delegation organized two alumni activities, and paid an official call on the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Sydney.
The first stop of this visit was Monash University, where Prof. Bao met with Prof. Matthew Gillespie AM, Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs) of Monash University. They exposed the dominant disciplines, achievements and development plans of their respective schools, and expressed their willingness to jointly promote personnel training and scientific research, as well as to cooperate closely in engineering education and engineering science. Housing an interactive tiered collaborative space, Woodside Building for Technology and Design allowed the delegation to have a better understanding of Monash University's educational philosophy that emphasizes university-industry cooperation.

The delegation then visited RMIT University and was warmly received by Prof. Calum Drummond, President (Acting) and Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. They explored to offer the opportunity for teacher and student exchanges, and exchanged views on cooperation in the field of engineering.

At University of Wollongong, Prof. Bao said that they are working closely with the university in engineering, and expects further personnel exchanges and scientific research cooperation in more disciplines. The delegation also visited the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials, a world-class collaborative team conducting research in superconducting and electronic materials science and technology located at the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials, the University of Wollongong's Innovation Campus.

During the visit to University of Sydney and the meeting with Professor Mark Scott, Prof. Bao proposed to seek common ground in their goal of building USTC into a world-class university with first-class disciplines and University of Sydney's 10-year “Sydney in 2032” strategy. Prof. Mark Scott affirmed it and expressed a preference for furthering all-round work and promoting complementary exchanges on dominant disciplines.

At University of Technology Sydney, the delegation signed a memorandum of cooperation with Professor Vicki Chen, Provost and Senior Vice-President. They focused on research cooperation in bioengineering at USTC's Suzhou Institute for Advanced Research, and discussed exchanges of faculty, mixed models of postgraduate training, and summer internship programs.

While the delegation visited University of Queensland, Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice President (Global Engagement) Li Rongyu made it plain that they were actively reaching out to partners in China. Their discuss revolved around the construction of a joint research center covering biomedicine, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence and carbon neutralization.

The delegation called on the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Sydney, held talks with Deputy Consul-General Wang Chunsheng and Consul for Educational Affairs Lin Xiaoqing, and discussed Sino-Australian cooperation and exchanges in education, science and technology.

On the last few days, the delegation held "USTC Information Session & Australian Alumni Meeting" in Melbourne and Sydney, introducing USTC's status quo, personnel policy and key disciplines to Australian alumni and scholars. The gathering of alumni including Wang Huanting, Yu Xinghuo, Li Weihua and Feng Qihong has played an active role in attracting high-end talents, developing channels of talent introduction and upholding the philosophy of "strengthening the university with high-level personnel”. Not only that, it also injected more vitality into the development of international high-level talents.

This visit consolidates the linkage between USTC and Australian universities, deepens its cooperation with some key universities, substantively promotes its international exchanges and cooperation, and helps construct the development pattern of scientific and technological innovation at a deeper level to rejuvenate the university through science and technology.
