On September 23, the opening ceremony of 2022 graduate students was held online and offline by Suzhou Institute for Advanced Research (SIAR), the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). Xu Wenqing, Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Dushu Lake Science & Education Innovation Zone (DLSEIZ) of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), Wu Huihui, Deputy Director of the Management Committee of DLSEIZ of SIP, Chu Jiaru, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of USTC, Secretary of the Party Committee and Executive Dean of SIAR, Ni Rui, Vice Dean of Graduate School of USTC and Vice Dean of SIAR, Zhou Shaohua, Executive Dean of School of Biomedical Engineering of USTC, Yang Qing, Vice Dean of School of Nanotechnology, Yang Qing, Chair Prof. Pan Tingrui, Yangtze River Scholar, as well as faculty members of related subjects attended the ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Tu Jing, Executive Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of SIAR and Vice Director of SIAR.
The ceremony started at 3:00 pm. Tu Jing firstly expressed his warm welcome and sincere congratulations to all the students who entered the new stage of study in SIAR of USTC, and introduced the guests to the audience.
The first item on the agenda was to stand up and sing the National Anthem of the People's Republic of China.


Secretary Xu Wenqing and Dean Chu Jiaru delivered speeches. Professor Pan Tingrui spoke on behalf of the faculty, and Sun Ruoyu, a doctoral student of USTC Suzhou Institute for Advanced Research in 2022, spoke on behalf of the new students. In his speech, Secretary Xu introduced the profound relationship between Suzhou and USTC and raised great expectations to the students. He hoped that all students would work diligently, shoulder the great mission, and create excellent performance.

President Chu expressed the welcome to all the students on behalf of all the faculty and students of SIAR. He introduced the new responsibility, new mission and new role of USTCers to the new students. He hoped that the students, with their youth and faith, set up ambitious goals and work righteously and diligently for a better future in the new era.

Prof. Pan explained the important qualities for postgraduate career. He pointed out that students need to adapt to the identity change from "college students" to "graduate students" as soon as possible, change the mindset from "digest known knowledge" to "explore the unknown", and cultivate the ability of independent discovery, analyzing and problem-solving. Prof. Pan encouraged students to think hard, experiment and challenge themselves on the path of study and research.
Mr. Sun said that in SIAR, new ideas are always encouraged and meaningful topics are always supported. Whether in the lab or the classroom, there are always like-minded friends to motivate and support each other. We hope that we can work together in SIAR, build up our strengths and create a better future!



The activity entered the awarding stage. Prof. Zhou Shaohua and Prof. Yang Qing presented the medals to the students in order to commend the volunteers for their hard work and selfless dedication during the second summer camp for outstanding students of SIAR.
The school song of USTC "Eternal East Wind" was played in the venue. The majestic and stirring melody echoed in everyone's heart for a long time.


The last item on the agenda was a special report by Professor Xin Houwen, former Vice President of USTC, who gave a special report to the students. As a well-known expert in explosion physics, quantum chemistry and nonlinear chemistry, Professor Xin's presentation focused on "Inheriting the spirit of science and being a new figure of the times", and talked about the 64-year history of USTC. Prof. Xin pointed out that the spirit of innovation and the ability of innovation are indispensable for scientific and technological achievements, and gave three suggestions to the students on how to improve their innovation ability. Prof. Xin's wonderful report touched and benefited the participating students and teachers.


The opening ceremony ended successfully in the applause. We wish all the new students a smooth and happy life in SIAR and make a chapter of youth and glory together.
